Do Not Call Registry: Get the Facts

Want to put an end to pesky telemarketer calls? You can. The federal government has set up a National Do Not Call Registry allowing you to do just that. It only takes moments to add your telephone number to the list, and once you do, telemarketers have up to three months to get it and remove it from their call lists. Registration lasts for five years.

To register your number, either call the registry at 888-382-1222 from the number you want removed, or log onto www.donotcall.gov to register up to three phone numbers at once. If you receive calls when you shouldn’t, you may file a complaint at the same number and website. As always, be aware of scams and misinformation.

  • Registration is free. The federal government does not charge for the service.

  • Only you can register your numbers. Any third party who claims they can help you register (usually for a fee) is probably a scam and definitely unnecessary.

  • There is no specific deadline to register any phone number. You may add your home or cell phone number to the registry at any date or time.
